Thanks for catching the second typo,...Gregory--
Thanks for catching the second typo, now fixed.
A few people have pointed out the absence of James Polk from the list. My logic was simply this: Yes, he served one term, but was very successful with his agenda and, though controvercial, was very popular. He didn't lose his office, but rather declined to run due to bad health. No loser he.
Thanks again for the comment.Ken Ackermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16348967274722508119noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4316486182743991911.post-5029584408126820632011-02-23T13:12:36.758-05:002011-02-23T13:12:36.758-05:00Dear Mr. Ackerman: Another typo: you have Hayes fi...Dear Mr. Ackerman: Another typo: you have Hayes fighting the contested election of 1976.

Given your politics, I'm a bit surprised you didn't put James Polk on your list. Slaveholder, warmonger, notorious liar, shooter in the back in a way that would warm Richard Nixon's heart, condemned by Congressman Abe Lincoln---plenty of evidence for today's academy to dump on him. All he has on the credit side is expanding the United States by about 60% and winning the war he started.

Sincerely yours,
Gregory KosterAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4316486182743991911.post-91176901544752647162011-02-22T17:14:57.850-05:002011-02-22T17:14:57.850-05:00Ken --

But I thought it might be considered unfair to compare presidents who took office on the death of another -- thus never had the advantage of winning an initial vote on their own -- with those who did. I believe he also took the lead in calling for Washington to be made commander-in-chief in 1775. Sorry, but I can't stand to see John Adams maligned when he did so much that was right. What are you thinking? A list of presiden...Ken --

What are you thinking? A list of presidential losers of the one-term variety that does not include Andrew Johnson? Or John Tyler? Or Millard Fillmore?

I imagine you will fall back on some definitional dodge -- that since those particular losers actually acceded to the presidency due to the death of a president, they do not qualify as one-term presidents. Yet all of them desperately wanted to be elected as president at the end of their terms, and were sufficiently unsuccessful that they stood no chance of it. There must be lessons there! Perhaps that can be another series of blogs, organized around Vice President's Day.

David O. StewartDavidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03802998911217993181noreply@blogger.com
