Wheeling ...I wonder if this is the same gentleman:
Wheeling (WVa) Register, Nov. 24, 1895 p. 7 Congressmen Who Gambled. Reminiscences of an Employe of the House of Representatives
“There used to be great games played in Sam Ward’s rooms when he was king of the lobby. Great men went there. One of them was a Christian statesman, who preached on Sundays in a Campbellite church in Washington, and lectured to female seminaries, just as old Billy Breckinridge used to do. He was just the size of Sam Ward, and occasionally wore Sam Ward’s dress suit and diamonds. It was no uncommon thing for statesmen of national reputation to go to Sam Ward’s to get fine dinners, elegant wines, and the finest of cigars. Some of them did not gamble, but there were many games for high states in those old Nailor rooms on E street. Schenck, Yulee and Bayard went there often, and they always were well entertained by the great lobbyist. But Ward’s place was not a gambling resort. It was his home, and the latch string was always out for his friends, the statesmen.”Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4316486182743991911.post-64419415175160838992012-02-09T07:44:31.774-05:002012-02-09T07:44:31.774-05:00I thoroughly enjoy reading John's writing.
